Therapeutic inertia and diabetes

Our ARC East Midlands team has introduced the concept of therapeutic inertia to address diabetes management in primary care. This approach has gained recognition on a national and international level.

With nearly 5 million people in the UK affected by diabetes, it is crucial to take early action in managing the condition. Failure to reach recommended blood sugar targets in a timely manner significantly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. By proactively adjusting treatment plans, healthcare professionals can mitigate this risk.

Therapeutic inertia refers to the failure to modify or intensify therapy when clinically necessary. The evidence supporting this approach has led to changes in clinical management, including global policies on early action in diabetes, updates to national and international guidelines, and the adoption of health technology for drug combinations and more frequent monitoring.
